August 2025 will be remembered as one of the most special weekends in HIKE2HEAL RECOVERY history. Thirty incredible people came together for our Ben Nevis weekend, and what unfolded over those few days was so much more than just climbing a mountain. It became a weekend full of connection, laughter, healing, support, and unforgettable memories.
For this trip we hired out the entire hostel, which made the whole experience even more powerful. From the moment everyone arrived there was a real sense of togetherness. People who had never met before were instantly chatting, sharing food, helping each other unpack, and getting excited for the challenge ahead.
Evenings in the hostel
The evenings in the hostel were something special on their own. After long days outdoors, everyone gathered together to eat, laugh, and share stories from life and recovery. Friendships deepened quickly, and many people said they felt understood and accepted in a way they hadn't experienced for a long time. These weekends remind us that recovery is not just about staying clean and sober — it's about rebuilding connection, confidence, and community.
The climb
Then came the climb. The weather was absolutely unbelievable. Normally, Ben Nevis can throw everything at you — rain, wind, freezing temperatures, and thick cloud — but this weekend we were blessed with glorious sunshine from start to finish. Even at the summit, it felt more like Spain than Scotland. The skies were bright blue, the views stretched for miles, and spirits were high throughout the entire hike.
The climb challenged everyone in different ways, but the support shown between participants was inspiring. Nobody was left behind. There were constant words of encouragement, shared snacks, helping hands across rocky sections, and moments where people simply stopped to take in the beauty around them. Watching thirty people from different walks of life climb together as one team was emotional and powerful.
The midges (and the midge nets)
One of the funniest memories had to be the battle with the Scottish midges. While the weather was perfect for hiking, the tiny biting insects definitely made their presence known. Some of the lads ended up buying midge net hats, which quickly became the fashion accessory of the weekend. Despite the constant swatting and laughing, it all added to the adventure.
The cold-water dip
After the hike, the cold-water dip was exactly what everyone needed. With the heat from the climb and the sunshine beating down all day, getting into the freezing water felt incredible. There was lots of screaming, laughing, and cheering as people took the plunge. For many, it became one of the highlights of the weekend — a moment of freedom, fun, and feeling fully alive.
Reaching the summit
Reaching the summit of Ben Nevis together was an emotional achievement. For many participants, this was about more than climbing a mountain. It represented overcoming personal struggles, proving to themselves they are capable of hard things, and showing how far they have come in recovery.
Weekends like this show the true power of community, nature, and shared experiences. We arrived as individuals, but we left feeling like family. Ben Nevis 2025 will stay in our hearts forever.
